Translation:

Worship of Lord Hari, comes easily to those who are aware. On the other hand, the ignorant ones are very unlucky in this world.

The cosmic egg is the manTapa, wherein the earth serves as the peeTa. The sun and moon are the lamp and holy plant. The chowries are pristine, with the atmosphere serving as the umbrella. The eight Yaamas (unit of time, approximately 3 hours) of the day are the eight petals of the lotus.

The rain is the ablution, with the universe as the garment. The wind wafting through the sandal trees is the aromatic incense. Every grain that has grown on this earth is his naivedya. The flashing lightning is the Arathi with camphor.

The star-studded sky is an array of million lamps. The two halves of the year are the forest. Within the flowers of the trees, resides Lakshmi, and inside her heart resides Shri Hari who enjoys all this forever.

The rumbling of the seven oceans, and the thunder are the vaadya gosha. Anything that is offered to the earth, is a tribute. The moon and the sun are the mirrors, and everything that is in motion, is a dance for His entertainment.

The four yugas are the legs of his bed. Tied up clouds form his expensive mattress. With the sky above him, and the Sun’s movement (through the months) are the changes around him. The six seasons are the Lord’s pillows.

The days are the betel leaves which are arranged according to the karanas. The yogas serve as the lime powder (churna), with the night itself as the arecanut. The water from Bhogavati (the subterranean capital of Nagaloka) serves as the gargling water. The pure ocean water is used to wash his feet, for his majestic form.

He who swallows and bears the entire universe in his belly, and he who vanquishes the sorrows of those who win his affection, and rejoices in the process, is none other than Lord Jagannatha Vitthala. May his blessings be with me forever.

Please save me without counting my sins, O the caretaker of the impoverished souls, Shree Madhwa Muni, the chief among all gurus!

How can I forget the favors you’ve granted to me? You are the foremost devotee of the one who is dearest to Goddess Lakshmi. You were revered as the most knowledgeable on this earth filled with common folks. O, the glorious one, shower us with the nectar of your compassion.

I am unwise, but am wholly devoted to you. So, do not ever keep account of my vices. Please make me wise, O the enlightened one! I have not seen anywhere in this world, anything that gives me as much bliss as your grace.

I am an ignorant fellow. Only you, the wise one, can save me. Because you are the embodiment of MukhyaPraana himself, and are forever meditating on the feet of Lord Jagannatha Vitthala.

Translation:

[Primer: Most of the song is based on the story of Garuda, as it appears in Adi Parva (Chapters 16-34) of Mahabharata (well summarized in this blog entry). ]

O, how very radiant, the vahana (vehicle) of Lord Hari (Shreepati)!

A peerless vahana across the fourteen worlds!

He was born as the son of Sage Kashyapa and Vinata. He, in his resplendent form, carried away his siblings. He devoured a group of fishermen in the middle of a forest. As per the instructions of his father, he also swallowed the turtle and the elephant.

He fought with the wielder of the thunderbolt, Lord Indra. He brought the Amrutakalasha by entering Devaloka. He destroyed his half-brothers (snake-sons of Kadru). He also brought the “hidden crown of Mahabali”1.

He was born as Kaalanaamaka2 in this world, and worshipped Lord Hari who is the essence of time. He released the vanaras from their shackles during the war3. He saved the Valakhilya sages by carrying them4.

He carried Mandara mountain to place on the ocean, prior to its churning. He serves Shri Hari, in his Nija roopa (true form). He brought the amrita to the Pitru Devatas2. He, who is the husband of Sauparni, is the golden vahana.

He is the vahana of Lord Hari, who is Pannaga Shayana (one who sleeps on the snake-bed), and Patita-Pavana (the deliverer of fallen souls). He protects the devotees who bow down to him. He is the dearest vahana to Lord Jagannatha who resides on Pannagadri (Seshadri). He is none other than Garuda!

1 When King Mahabali failed to fulfill his promise to Shri. Hari in his Vamana avatar, Garuda arrested Mahabali with his GarudaPasha and brought him before Lord Hari.

2 Reference incomplete.

This is in reference to Day 1 of Yuddha Kanda of Ramayana, where Garuda came to rescue Rama, Lakshmana and Vanaras from Indrajit’s Nagapasha.

4Valakhilya rishis were hanging upside down from the banyan tree, where Garuda sat with the turtle and elephant. When he noticed the branch shearing, he grabbed the branch in his talons and saved them. There is yet another reference to Valakhilya sages who cursed Indra that his arrogance will be vanquished by the King of Birds, which is a precursor to Garuda’s birth.

O, son of Parvati, the boastful1 one! The ocean of unconditional grace! I prostrate before your lotus feet.

O, the wielder of tusk, sweet modaka, and the noose-goad2! O, one of incomparable valor, and Charudeshna (the son of Krishna-Rukmini)3, I bow down to you.

You are the God who is worshipped by many. Please show me your lotus feet! O leader of the herd, and one whose face shines like the sun. You are the subject of Shri. Jagannatha Vitthala’s utmost affection. Victory to you!

*Note: There are several versions (1,2) online. But we are singing the version learnt from our Guru.

1 Various sources give conflicting meanings for ‘Heramba’ (Protector of the Weak according to Brahmavaivarta Purana. However, it seems “peculiarly artificial” according to the reference in Wikipedia.) Although one of the literal meanings in Sanskrit is ‘buffalo’, we choose ‘the boastful’ as the more appropriate meaning in this context.

2 These are some of the things wielded by Heramba Ganapati. Especially the noose and the goad (pasha and ankusha) signify Raaga and Dwesha.

3 Ganapathi was born as “Charudeshna”, the son of Krishna-Rukmini (hence, is considered to be in the 18th Kakshya). https://www.facebook.com/umswamiji/posts/527532367318659
