೯. ಅಂಬಾತನಯ

ಅಂಬಾತನಯ ಹೇರಂಬ ।।ಪ।।

ಅಂಬಾತನಯ ಹೇರಂಬ ಪೂರ್ಣ
ಕರುಣಾಮ್ಬುಧೇ ತವ ಚರಣಾಮ್ಬುಜಕೆರಗುವೆ ।।ಅ।।

ದಶನ ಮೋದಕ ಪಾಶಾಂಕುಶ ಪಾಣೆ
ಅಸಮಸಹಸ ಚಾರುದೇಷ್ಣ ವಂದಿಪೆ ।।೧।।

ವೃಂದಾರಕ ವೃಂದ ವಂದಿತ ಚರಣಾರ
ವಿಂದಯುಗಳ ದಯದಿಂದ ತೋರೆನಗೆ
ಯೂಥಪವದನ ಪ್ರದ್ಯೋತಸನ್ನಿಭ
ಜಗನ್ನಾಥ ವಿಠ್ಠಲನ ಸಂಪ್ರೀತಿ ವಿಷಯ ಜಯ ।।೨।।

Transliteration:

P: Ambatanaya heramba

A: Ambatanaya heramba poorna

karunaambude thava charanambujakeraguve

1. Dashana modaka paashaankusha paaNe

asamasahasa chaarudeshna vandipe

2. Vrundaaraka vrundavandita charanaara

vindayugala dayadinda thorenage

yuthapavadana pradyothasanniba

jagannatha vitthalana sampreeti vishaya jaya

Translation:

O, son of Parvati, the boastful1 one! The ocean of unconditional grace! I prostrate before your lotus feet.

O, the wielder of tusk, sweet modaka, and the noose-goad2! O, one of incomparable valor, and Charudeshna (the son of Krishna-Rukmini)3, I bow down to you.

You are the God who is worshipped by many. Please show me your lotus feet! O leader of the herd, and one whose face shines like the sun. You are the subject of Shri. Jagannatha Vitthala’s utmost affection. Victory to you!

1 Various sources give conflicting meanings for ‘Heramba’ (Protector of the Weak according to Brahmavaivarta Purana. However, it seems “peculiarly artificial” according to the reference in Wikipedia.) Although one of the literal meanings in Sanskrit is ‘buffalo’, we choose ‘the boastful’ as the more appropriate meaning in this context.

2 These are some of the things wielded by Heramba Ganapati. Especially the noose and the goad (pasha and ankusha) signify Raaga and Dwesha.

ಅಡಿಗಳಿಗೊಂದಿಪೆ ಪುರಂದರ ಗುರುವೆ ।।ಪ।।

ಕಡು ಜ್ಞಾನ ಭಕ್ತಿ ವೈರಾಗ್ಯದ ನಿಧಿಯೇ ।।ಅ।।

ವರ ಮಧ್ವಮತ ಕ್ಷೀರಾಂಬುಧಿಗೆ ಚಂದ್ರನಾದೆ
ಗುರು ವ್ಯಾಸರಾಯರಿಂದುಪದೇಶಗೊಂಡೆ
ಎರಡೆರಡು ಲಕ್ಷದೆಪತ್ತು ಐದುಸಾವಿರ
ವರ ನಾಮಾವಳಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಹರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದೆ ।।೧।।

ಗಂಗಾದಿ ಸಕಲ ತೀರ್ಥಂಗಳ ಚರಿಸಿದ
ರಂಗವದನ ವೇದವ್ಯಾಸನ
ಹಿಂಗದೆ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆನೆದು ನೆನೆದು ಮೆರೆವ
ಮಂಗಳ ಮಹಿಮೆಯ ನುತಿಸಿ ನುತಿಸಿ ನಾ ।।೨।।

ನಿನ್ನತಿಶಯಗುಣ ವರ್ಣಿಸಲಳವಲ್ಲ
ನಿನ್ನ ಸೇವಕನ ಸೇವಕನೆಂತೆಂದು
ಪನ್ನಗಶಯನ ಮುಕುಂದ ಕರುಣ ಪ್ರ
ಸನ್ನ ವಿಜಯವಿಠ್ಠಲ ಸಂಪನ್ನ ।।೩।।

Transliteration:

P: Adigaligondippe purandara guruve

A: Kadu gnaana bhakti vairaagyada nidiye

1. Vara madwamata ksheeraambudhige chandranaathe

guru vyaasaraayarindupadeshagonde

eraderadu lakshadheppathaidhu saavira

vara naamavali maadi harige arpisidhe

2. Gangadi sakala theerthangala charisida

rangavadana vedavyasana

hingade manadhalli nenedu nenedu mereva

mangala mahimeya nuthisi nuthisi na

3. Ninnathishayaguna varnisalaLavalla

ninna sevakana sevakanentendu

pannaga shayana mukunda karuna pra

sanna vijayavitthala sampanna

Translation:

I will prostrate myself before your feet, O Guru Purandara! (in reference to Purandara dasaru).

O the bestower of rigorous knowledge, devotion and dispassion!

You became the moon for the bountiful ocean of milk, that is the Madhwa philosophy. You gained wisdom under the tutelage of Shri. Vyasarajaru. You composed 4,75,000* songs and dedicated to Lord Hari.

I shall relentlessly ponder upon and praise the glories of the beautiful faced Lord Veda Vyasa, who roamed about the holy rivers such as Ganga.

There is no limit to describing your wondrous qualities. I will happily serve whoever serves you, O Lord, Pannaga Shayana (the one who sleeps on the snake bed), Mukunda (the giver of Mukti), Karuna (the merciful), Prasanna (the peaceful), VijayaVitthala Sampanna (the virtuous).

೫. ಅಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳ ಕೂಡೆ

ಅಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳ ಕೂಡೆ ಅಧಿಕ ಸ್ನೇಹಕ್ಕಿಂತ
ಸುಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳ ಕೂಡೆ ಜಗಳವೇ ಲೇಸು ।।ಪ।।

ಉಂಬುಡುವುದಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲದರಸಿ ನೋಲಗಕ್ಕಿಂತ
ತುಂಬಿದೂರೊಳಗೆ ತಿರಿದುಂಬುವುದೇ ಲೇಸು
ಹಂಬಲಿಸಿ ಹಾಳ್ ಹರಟೆ ಹೊಡೆವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹರಿ
ಯೆಂಬ ದಾಸರ ಕೂಡೆ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆಯೇ ಲೇಸು ।।೧।।

ಒಡನೆ ಹಂಗಿಸುವನೋಗರವನುಂಬುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ
ಕುಡಿನೀರು ಕುಡಿದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದೇ ಲೇಸು
ಬಿಡದೆ ಬಾಂಧವರೊಡನೆ ಕಡಿದಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ
ಅಡವಿಯೊಳಜ್ಞಾತವಾಸವೇ ಲೇಸು ।।೨।।

ಮಸೆಯುತಿಹ ಮತ್ಸರದ ನೆರೆಯೊಳಿರುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ
ಹಸನಿಲ್ಲದ ಹಾಳುಗುಡಿಯೆ ಲೇಸು
ಬಿಸಜಾಕ್ಷ ಕಾಗಿನೆಲೆಯಾದಿ ಕೇಶವರಾಯ
ವಸುಮತಿಯೊಳು ನಿನ್ನ ದಾಸತ್ವವೇ ಲೇಸು ।।೩।।

Sujnaanigala koode jagalave lesu

1.  Umbuduvudakilladarasi nolagakinta

tumbidoorolage tiridumbuvude lesu

hambalisi haaLharate hodevudakinta hari

yemba dasara koode sambaashaneye lesu

2. Odane hangisuvanogaravanumbuvudakinta

kudineeru kudidukondiruvude lesu

bidade baandavarodane kadidaaduvudakinta

adaviyoLajnaathavaasave lesu

3. Maseyutiha matsarada nereyoLiruvudakinta

hasanillada haaLugudiye lesu

bisajaaksha kaagineleyadi keshavaraaya

vasumatiyoLu ninna dasatvave lesu

Translation:

A dispute with the wise is far better than a deep friendship with the ignorant.

Wandering in search of alms in an abundant nation is far better than being in service of a king who cannot feed his subjects. Having a conversation with the saints who praise the name of Lord Hari is far better than happily gossiping trivial matters.

It is far better to survive by drinking water, than consuming the food served by the one who mocks you. It is far better to live in a forest incognito, than constantly bickering with your relatives.

Instead of living in the neighborhood of envious people, it is better to migrate to a temple in ruins. Of all things on this earth, O Lotus-eyed Lord Keshava, being your dasa is the greatest.
